Shri. Ganeshdas Rathi Chhatralaya Samiti, the parent body of the college, was founded in the year 1950 with a generous grant of Rs. 50,000/- from a good Samaritan Rai Bahadur Shri. Ganeshdasji Rathi to provide hostel facility to
Rajasthani students coming from the rural areas. Later on, the Samiti felt the need for establishing an institution of higher education, which, materialized with the establishment of Raj Mahavidyalaya in 1960 Under the stewardship
of the first Principal Shri. G. R. Kotwal. The college was later renamed as Smt. Kesharbai Lahoti Mahavidyalaya after the generous and philanthropic lady from the region, Hon. Smt. Kesharbai Lahoti.
The college was founded at such a point of time when thinking of higher education was like asking for the moon especially for the masses, as there were very few educational institutes imparting higher education.
The college later in the year 1962 added Commerce Faculty to the existing Arts and Social Science Faculties. Principal Shri. G. R. Kotawal steered the newly established college successfully till he handed over the baton to Shri. R.N. Mundhada, who became the Principal of the college in 1965. During his tenure many more programmes were added. The college continued its vertical mobility and P.G. courses of M.A. Hindi (1970) and M. Com. (1972) were introduced. Thereafter P.G. Diploma course in Taxation and B. Com. (English Medium) were introduced in the year 1981. The college has a Junior Wing (Arts and Commerce, 1976). Another stream was added to the junior wing with the commencement of H.S.C.(Vocational) in 1992. The senior wing continued its victorious march adding D.B.M. in 2003, Bachelor of Mass Communication (B.M.C.), M.A. History in 2005, M.A. Geography, Master of Computer Management (M.C.M.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in 2006 and Bachelor of Computer Application (B.C.A.) in 2008. In order to cultivate and nurture the research spirit amongst the students, the college has started Ph.D. Research Centres in 8 subjects Commerce, Business Economics, Economics, Political Science, Hindi, English, Persian and Geogrpahy. Apart from these, five skill development Add On/ Certificate Courses are also introduced. Moreover, ours is the only college (privately managed) to take care of minorities by providing opportunities to learn languages like Urdu and Persian at higher level (through Arts faculty). The association of students speaking different principal languages leads to inculcation of the spirit of equality, brotherhood, secularism and mutual co-operation. The sapling, which was planted six decades ago, has blossomed into a full-grown tree providing academic opportunities to maximum number of youngsters. Recently in year 2018, the patron samiti has been given Marawadi Linguistic Minority Educational Institution status by the Government of Maharashtra.
Thus the college has inherited a rich heritage and left an indelible mark on the educational and social life of Amravati and won applause from the general public as well as the discerning persons of the region.
